Which LED for Night Vision?

I have the Night vision goggles from the Call Of Duty Modern Warfare 2 box. It has an ok range but not the best. I was wondering if I could make a better version of this setup, Or improve with an IR LED array. I searched on Ebay for these LED's I found lots however they are at different wavelengths example 840nm, 850nm, 940nm and 950nm. Which would provide a longer distance of view with a reasonable sized array say 24 LED's running any voltage required. Is there a better alternative for distance with IR LED. Or even a better Night vision setup. Ps, (Don't tell me to go buy a FLIR I cannot buy one in canada due to being classed as fire arm Scopes. I can't drive it accross the border and not to mention they cost 4-5 grand.)
